What's the best Catfish Bait?

The best baits for catfishing is what they feed on naturally... ALWAYS!
Shad and smaller bait fish are the usual preference of the catfish and where they are located, but......people place too much on the baits when they should be focusing on the environment the fish are in and locate the fish instead of going out sitting in one public fishing hole and throwing every kind of bait they can think of until a fish happens to come through or mess with it all day long.

focus more on fish location instead of some kinda magic potion and you'll do a lot better ... fish structure ... current eddies ... humps ... a place they can stay cool in the day, anything to locate the catfish cause just sitting in one spot and throwing all kinds of baits at them makes about as much sense as going bass fishing on the dam of a pond and throwing every bait there is at them that you have in your tackle box all day long and never moving and when you throw that last lure you have at them and nothing takes the bait then you pack up and go home and tell the wife ... they weren't biting today. ....

when this same guy would normally be working the creek and around stumps and whatever else is in the pond ... I really wonder why catfishermen don't view catfishing the same way because that's how you have to do catfishing too ... you can't just sit in one spot and expect to catch fish or think the fish are there ... it ain't like that. If you're fishing an area that is a healthy environment for the fish and they have plenty of food you'll not be able to catch them on just any old thing ... you will have to use what they feed upon. This is usually the case in most waters ... Deep Forks in rivers being the exception to all these. I've bought a truck load of fishing catfish Baits of different kinds and used them with no success and then find something to use on the bank like bugs, worms or toads and started catching some fish and then be unable to find any more and go back to the prepared baits and not catch anything again except little bitty fish.

Ingredients - Hamburger Meat , Vanilla Extract, Garlic Salt
Instructions- Put about a pound of hamburger meat in a bowl and add about a small bottle of vanilla extract and pour in about 3 spoon fools of garlic salt and mix it up. Once mixed roll it in to balls about the size of a quarter and put it in the fridge. And after about an hour take the netting from an potato bag and wrap the little balls in it's own caseing and put a small rubber band to seal it up so it wont fall off the hook.
Great for flatheads. I've caught 30 pounders on it.

Ingredients- 5-10 shad or 2 dozen minnows , 8 0z Limburger cheese, wheat flour
Instructions-In a 2lb coffee can put the shad and cut up cheese... bury it in the ground. in another 2 lb coffee can put about 2 inches of wheat... put in enough water to cover the wheat... cover the top and let it set until the water is good and sour. Usually one to two weeks. Dig up the first can, pour in the water add flour or cotton seed to thicken. Mix it all up and use as sponge bait. This stuff will knock a buzzard off a crap wagon. And it catches fish even when they aren't normally bitting good.

Ingredients- hamburger , wheaties, 2 cans sardines in mustard sauce, chopped garlic, 2eggs
Instructions - mix hamburger wheaties sardines chopped garlic and 2 eggs in a bowl keep adding wheaties till it gets thick make into a big ball then take some wheaties with you so when you pinch off small balls use a few more wheaties to make it hold together this is a good paylake bait have used it for at least 8 years it works best in warm weather
